On June 8th, Canada 2020 will be hosting The Good, the Bad and the Great Unknown of Social Media Bans — an important discussion featuring experts in child safety, tech policy, privacy and digital platforms. Together, they’ll offer a frank and honest assessment of how best to hold platforms accountable, respect privacy and, most importantly, keep kids safe.
Canada is actively pursuing a social media ban for children under the age of 16, following in the footsteps of Australia’s Social Media Minimum Age (SMMA) act. As Prime Minister Mark Carney recently stated at the summit, “one of the benefits of going later on online safety is learning from the lessons of those that went first.”
This conversation will assess Australia’s SMMA and whether it’s the model Canada should follow for its own online harms legislation. What’s working? What’s not? What are policymakers trying to solve for — and will a ban on platforms actually keep Canadian kids safer online?
