Demand without supply: What Canada needs to do to create a resilient health sector

On top of the immediate health concerns posed by COVID-19, the pandemic is also upending global manufacturing processes and disrupting Canada’s health sector supply chain. Experts predict that it will be months, or even years, until supply chain processes are back to normal. What can Canada learn from this experience? How will governments, the public and private sector, work to rebuild and establish greater supply chain resilience to support our health care sector?

Never Again: Restoring Trust with Canada’s Seniors

Bringing together leading policymakers, decision-makers, and healthcare experts, Canada 2020 is convening a half-day virtual conference focused on reforming and redesigning Canada’s seniors’ care sector. Learning from the hard lessons of this pandemic, we will discuss the immediate steps we can take to restore the trust that has been broken, and how care should best be delivered, from home care to retirement and long-term care homes.

With 69% of pandemic-related deaths being in long-term care and retirement homes and the highest reported proportion of pandemic-related deaths internationally for long-term care facilities, the impact of COVID-19 has put a spotlight on how Canadian seniors are cared for and questions regarding what needs to change.

While the pandemic has galvanized public attention, deep fractures in Canada’s seniors-care sector are decades in the making and have exposed and amplified a failure of some to value and invest in safe and effective care. In order to build back better for our seniors, policy reforms and structural changes are critical.
