Ottawa, 6 May —Canada 2020 hosted a panel discussion titled “Telecom in Canada: A New Owner’s Manual — Making Sense of the Policy and Politics.” This panel examined what foreign ownership will mean for the telecoms industry, consumers, and businesses.  The panelists were Konrad von Finckenstein, Chairman of the CRTC; Robert Rabinovitch, former president, Canadian Broadcast Corporation; and Lawson Hunter, Stikeman Elliot, former senior executive at BCE and former federal head of competition policy and enforcement. The moderator was Don Newman, CBC broadcaster, political commentator and Canada 2020 Advisory Board Member.

Ottawa, 3 February — Canada 2020 hosted a panel discussion of leading economic thinkers entitled Federal Pre-Budget Debate: Cut Spending or Keep Priming the Pump?” The Hon. John Manley, Kevin Page, Avery Shenfeld, and Scott Clark addressed the broad question of whether now is the right time for fiscal restraint, or whether further stimulus should be contemplated. The panel was moderated by award-winning journalist Don Newman.

Ottawa, 8 September — Dambisa Moyo, author of Dead Aid. Dambisa argued for more innovative ways for Africa to finance development including trade with China, accessing the capital markets, and microfinance. While we work to upload the video of the event, here are some photos.

Ottawa, 11 June — Paul Lavoie, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Taxi, Canada’s premiere advertising company. Lavoie argued that Brand Canada is not just about selling moose, mountains and maple syrup, but also about attracting talent, investments, entrepreneurs, students, tourists, international sporting and cultural events, R&D, and the latest technology available.

Ottawa, 16 April — Drew Westen, clinical psychologist and author of The Political Brain spoke on Effective Political Communications. Bill Clinton called Westen’s ground-breaking examination into the role of emotion in the political life of the nation, “The most interesting, informative book on politics I’ve read in many years.”

Ottawa, 23 February — Niall Ferguson, noted economic historian, author, and Harvard Professor outlined the next steps in the current “Great Depression to a packed Canada 2020 Speakers Series crowd.  Ferguson’s latest book is The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, in which he examines the impact of money on history, politics and society.

Ottawa, 30 September 2008 — Dr. Fan Gang, Director of the National Economic Research Institute (NERI) and Chairman of the China Reform Foundation, China’s first economic think-tank and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the People’s Bank of China spoke at a lively Canada 2020 Speakers Series event. Dr. Fan spoke about the future of China’s economic development, a topic which he discussed with Business Week.

Ottawa, 3 June 2008 — Noted economist Tom Courchene speaks to a sold out Canada 2020 luncheon crowd, setting out why the idea of a carbon tax is gaining ground as the preferred policy instrument for addressing climate change. At the lunch, he outlined how one might be workable and some likely impacts on Canadian firms internationally. Courchene also called for the creation of a robust infrastructure for the coming economic federalism required to address climate change.

Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada, was the respondent.

The Hon. Anne McLellan, of Canada 2020′s Advisory Board, moderated the Q&A session.

Ottawa, 27 March 2008 — Canada 2020 heard from Gene Sperling, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and a Senior Fellow for Economic Policy and Director of the Center for Universal Education atthe Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Sperling was President Clinton’s National Economic Adviser and Head of the National Economic Council (1997-2001).

Mr. Sperling spoke about the current economic situation in the US and the impact on the rest of the world.  A video of the talk will be available soon or you can catch it on CPAC.
